Beckham returns to the MLS with a win

7/17/09

The Galaxy beat the NY Red Bulls by 3x1 at the great Giants Stadium and saw David Beckham return to the league thursday night.

David Beckham only played an average game despite the Galaxy looking very good overall. LA's goals were scored by Alecko Eskandarian, Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis all in the first half; while NY's came only 3 mins before the final whistle with Juan Pablo Angel from the pk spot.

Of course there was drama upon his return, just as there was when he left. It all started when Donovan's quotes from Grant Whal's book "The Beckham Experiment" were released prior to DBecks' arrival. These were the words:
“When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing, he cared."
"He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well."
After Ruud Gullit's departure... "He just flipped a switch and said, ‘Uh-huh, I’m not doing it anymore’."
"I can’t think of another guy where I’d say he wasn’t a good team-mate, he didn’t give everything through all this, he didn’t still care,"
"But with (Beckham), I’d say no, he wasn’t committed."

So Beckham arrived, did some more underwear shoots, displayed his new tatoo and met with Donovan. What they said, we don't know, but at least it looks like they made up.

How long that will last is unknown, Capello told Becks in order to play in the World Cup next year, he needs to be playing in Europe. Players don't just say no to a World Cup, so why would Beckham?
You can't please everyone, but I think that if he shows hard work while he plays for the Galaxy, at least his future departure won't look as bad as the first one... A bit of damage control I suppose?!
